Here is the
newsletter for July. We are getting into our busiest month of the year
for the group and hope that everyone can participate and help where ever
they can. We have our iris sale at the end of the month. This is our
primary fund raiser of the year. We need everyone to check their gardens
and help us with as many rhizomes as possible to be sold for this event.

Thanks to Elizabeth Friesz for hosting the June MIS meeting. Her iris
were beautiful and we want to thank her for her hospitality.
Sunshine Report: Linda Sadler is recovering at home from knee
replacement surgery. The good news is she is up and getting around. The
bad news is it probably hurts. Get well soon.
JUDGES TRAINING CLASS: To be held Saturday, June 25 at 1:30 p.m.
at the home of Swede and Betty Ann Gustafson. Ann Violete will be the
instructor. Everyon e who is interested can attend. The fee is $5.00.

Fort Garden Work Parties: Billie Gray will be working out at the
gardens every Friday morning from 10 am until Noon with a group of
community service people. Anyone is welcome to come out and help with
the weeding.
July Schedule: Lots going on this month so be sure to read the
schedule below. No meeting in August and no newsletter in August.
November meeting: We need a host/hostess for November meeting,
either at their home or we have reserved the Eagles Lodge for that
meeting. Good chance for someone who does not have room in their home
for the group.

M. I. S. Minutes
President Ed called the meeting to order on Sat June 4th, 2011 6:30 at
Elizabeth Friesz’s home.
Asked if everyone read the minutes in the newsletter and asked for a
motion. Motion made by Honk Meyer & 2nd by Bob Symes with one
correction. The correction was a check for $10 was left off made out to
Betty Ann for new plaque to be put on the urn/vase for People’s Choice
award.
Treasurer Swede Gustafson stated the present balance of the treasury is
$5395.
Old Business:
Swede reported on the median show. Set up on Friday only took 40 minutes
so went out for dessert afterwards. 70 entries were counted. There were
2 tables of IB and 2 tables of SDB, along with 1 tall bearded and 3 MDB.
Roger won best of show with a SDB, 2nd place was Gary with a IB and 3
place was Fred with a SDB, Roger also had best MDB.
Thanks were given to
all that helped with the show.
Betty Ann reported
on the main show June 11th. Set up is at 8pm in the JC Penny’s court
with judges meeting at 7pm. Anyone can come to that. The award ceremony
will be at 7pm with cake & ice cream and after show take down is at 8pm.
Tags, programs & posters were passed out at meeting. If anyone needs any
before Friday please call Betty Ann.
New business:
Sale flyers are ready for people to have and put up in July. Thanks to
Fred for all the publicity.
Decision on ice cream social at the gardens will be Wed. June 29th at 6
pm.
Pete to put out the word for the social.
Judy Blunt won the presidential rhizome.
Bob Symes moved to adjourn the meeting and Judy 2nd.

TREASURER’S REPORT FOR JUNE 2011
At the June meeting I noted a couple of errors in regard to the reported
Checking Account: A bill of $10.00 paid to Betty Ann Gustafson for the
expense paid to have a new name plate engraved on the People’s Choice
Trophy was not included in the list of reported expenses. I also made a
$1.00 typo for the total expenses which were actually $62.48 thus
leaving corrected balance at $534.95.
SAVING ACCOUNT:
May 24 Reported Balance: $$8,514.52 Since then I have deposited $30.00
in receipts from the June 18 Judges Training Class and transferred
$1100.00 to the Checking Account to pay expenses incurred since May 24,
2011. ($1020.05 was moved from the Regular Club Sub-Account and $79.95
was moved from the Judges Sub-Account.)
The June 21, 2011 Account Balance is $7,444.52.
New Sub-Account Balances:
Club Account $ 6,431.47
Judges Account 501.05
Memorials Account 512.00
CHECKING ACCOUNT:
May 24 Corrected Balance: $534.95. Since then I have made the deposits
of $1100 from the Savings Account as above which gives a Balance of
$1634.95. I have paid expenses totaling $1,231.33. The balance remaining
is $403.62. I paid the following expenses during the past month: $118.44
to Pete Addeo for A toner refill pack which was used for color printing
of posters, etc over a two year period; $150.00 to Carol Addeo for
newsletter expense for July through Dec 2011; $16.15 to Allegra Printing
for the June show schedules; $200.00 in cash was withdrawn to assist
show judges and workers for their lunches during
the Median and Main shows ($5.00 each person each show): Visiting Judge
Jeanette Graham was paid $25.45 for Judges Training expenses incurred
and $150.00 in travel expenses and gratuity from Trim Falls, ID; Judy
Blunt was reimbursed $35.00 for making a cake and purchasing ice cream
for the June show “Ice Cream Social” awards party; Paul Ronaldo was paid
$213.50 for repairs and other services on the Fort Missoula Iris Display
Garden sprinkler system; $69.85 was reimbursed Elizabeth Gustafson for
cleaning costs for the green show table clothes and also reimbursed
$37.94 for Sunshine flowers to Linda Sadler following knee surgery;
$200.00 was sent to MidAmerica Garden for the PREZ rhizome order; three
checks in the amount of $5.00 each were sent to Lynn Weger,
Roger Muir and Jim
Sadler for their Median Show lunch money. I also have deposited $75.00
in cash remaining from the lunch fund which leaves a June 21, 2011
balance of $478.62 in this Account.

Set up begins at 7:30 a.m. Annual after sale party at back yard of
Billie Gray 1pm
ANNUAL RHIZOME SALE is to be held Saturday, July 30th from 9 a.m.
to 1:00 p.m. at Fort Missoula. Sorting and drop off location is Addeo's
back yard in Linda Vista. Address is 5805 Helena Dr. Call 251-5833 for
directions. Drop off your cleaned and labeled rhizomes to their garage
between Tuesday, July 26 thru Wednesday July 27 at 9:00 p.m. prior to
the sale. PLEASE TRY TO COME AND HELP SORT ON THURSDAY AND FRIDAY!!
Sale Committee - Sale Chairpersons are Carol and Pete Addeo at
251-5833. . Please donate your paper grocery bags to the sale.
SALE DIGGING PARTY - Sunday, July 24- Meet at Fort Gardens at
8:30 a.m. for carpooling to Victor. This year we will dig the iris of
Charles Hiigel and Jeff White in Victor. After the digging, Charles and
Jeff will treat us to dinner. This is always a fun work party, watching
Pete soak himself as he cleans the iris, so join in the fun. We will be
digging, dividing, and labeling. Unfinished work will be carried to
Addeo's to be finished on Mon and Tues, if needed. Bring scissors,
clippers, garden marker pens, paper grocery bags and bug spray. Bring
your own chairs.
HELP NEEDED: Some people have tons of iris to divide and dig, and
may need help digging or cleaning. Fred Frey does need help. Volunteer
your services where needed. Calls may be put out for help if needed on
Monday and Tuesday before the sale. Of course, help is needed Thursday
and Friday July 28 and 29 with sorting, organizing, etc. and help is
needed on Saturday with the sale.
STONE SOUP PARTY - Friday, July 29, 6:00 p.m. at Addeo's. Bring a
soup ingredient; we'll supply the meat stock from poultry. Or bring a
dessert, or bread or salad.
Saturday, July 30- 7:30 a.m. Set up for the sale at Fort
Missoula. Bring pitchforks AND CHAIRS.
Saturday - 1:15 p.m. - PARTY TIME! After-sale party after the
sale is closed and clean up is completed. We meet in the back patio of
Billie Gray's home at 1558 S.6th St West. Pizza, chicken, soft drinks
and beer provided. This is usually where we all receive the Presidential
Rhizomes we won during the year. We also have a fun auction on any
extras we receive.
The rhizome labels will be available at the meeting July 9 or call Carol
at 251-5833 to pick some up.
RHIZOME SALE GUIDELINES
Please read the Pre-Sale guidelines & Clarifications carefully. These
guidelines were put together to avoid confusion during the sale
preparations on Thursday and Friday.
SALE GUIDELINES:
1. Iris rhizomes shall be grown by MIS members only.
2. ALL RHIZOMES are to be WASHED, TRIMMED & LABELED as to variety and
type PRIOR to delivery to the collection site. Trim fans to about 4
inches - 6 inches depending on type and roots to about 4 inches. MIS
will provide labels. These labels should be stapled to the leaves. MDB's
and SDB's should be in bundles of three rhizomes. IB's and MTB's should
be in bundles of two rhizomes. Beardless iris are to be in clumps.
3. Iris varieties introduced 30 years or more before the year of the
sale are to be labeled with year of introduction and separated from
newer varieties.
4. Pricing of rhizomes is at the discretion of the sale committee. Age
is considered but NOT color for setting the price.
5. All rhizomes are to be delivered to the designated collection site by
9pm WEDNESDAY preceding the sale.
6. Sorting, etc. will be done on THURSDAY and competed on FRIDAY.
Chairperson to select committee of MIS members to assist in this
process.
7. There are to be NO PRE-SALE orders.
PRE-SALE CLARIFICATIONS:
1. There is to be NO TRADING of rhizomes among members at the COLLECTION
SITE. Members ARE encouraged to share or trade before bringing rhizomes
to the collection site.
2. The sale chairperson shall determine which varieties may be traded /
purchased by the MIS members. The trading / sale hours are Thursday, 6pm
- 9pm and Friday, 9am - 12pm.
3. Members donating rhizomes may:
A. Take ONE rhizome for each variety donated (no matter how many of any
one variety are donated)
B. Take LIKE variety donated (SDB for SDB, TB for TB, etc)
C. Take NO MORE THAN ONE (1) RHIZOME of any one variety.
D. May NOT choose from a variety that has fewer than SIX rhizomes in the
box.
4. Members NOT donating rhizomes may purchase rhizomes (with the above
restrictions)
5. Varieties 5 years and newer from date of introduction will be so
marked and priced accordingly. Fort Display Garden Chairperson has first
choice of any varieties.
6. GRAB BAGS of iris rhizomes may be made up of unnamed or overstocked
varieties at discretion of the chairperson by Friday.
